Welcome to Year 4
2025 ~ 2026
We are Storey Class
Welcome to Year 4 Storey Class.
Our class teachers are Mrs Hillerton (Monday - Wednesday) and Mrs Brady (Thursday - Friday).
Our Learning Support Assistant (LSA) is Mrs Helyar.
We’re excited to share an overview of what your child will be learning in Year 4. Our curriculum aims to build on the solid foundations of previous years while encouraging independence, confidence, and a love of learning.
Our PE lessons will take place on Tuesdays. Please ensure your child comes to school in their school PE kit on this day each week.
In Year 4, pupils will further develop their writing skills by focusing on:
Grammar & punctuation: Using fronted adverbials, expanded noun phrases, apostrophes for possession and omission and direct speech with correct punctuation.
Spelling: Following the Year 4 spelling patterns, including words with prefixes and suffixes, homophones and commonly misspelled words.
Creative writing: Writing for a range of purposes – including narratives, letters, poetry and non-fiction reports – with an emphasis on planning, editing and improving their work.
Handwriting: Continuing to develop fluent, joined-up handwriting.
Reading is a key focus in Year 4, with an emphasis on:
Fluency and expression: Reading aloud with confidence and intonation.
Comprehension: Understanding and discussing texts by making predictions, inferences and identifying key themes and facts.
Vocabulary development: Exploring ambitious language and discussing the meaning of new words in context.
Reading for pleasure: Encouraging regular reading at home and school, with exposure to a wide variety of authors, genres and text types.
Children will take part in whole-class reading sessions, guided reading, and independent reading activities.
In Year 4, we aim to deepen pupils’ understanding of key mathematical concepts through fluency, reasoning and problem-solving. Areas of focus include:
Number & place value: Understanding numbers up to 10,000, including rounding and comparing.
Addition & subtraction: Using formal written methods and solving two-step problems.
Multiplication & division: Recalling and applying multiplication facts up to 12x12 and using formal written methods.
Fractions & decimals: Recognising and showing families of equivalent fractions, adding and subtracting fractions and understanding decimals to two decimal places.
Measurement: Converting between units, calculating perimeter and solving money and time problems.
Geometry: Identifying angles, symmetry and properties of 2D and 3D shapes.
Statistics: Interpreting and presenting data using charts and graphs.
⚠️ Times Tables Check: By the end of Year 4, children are expected to know all their times tables up to 12 × 12. Regular practice at home will support them in preparing for the national Multiplication Tables Check in the summer term. A link to Times Tables Rockstars can be found further down this page. Additional information will be sent out to you later in the school year.
Children in Year 4 will study the full range of subjects across the year with a project based focus. Key History projects include Ancient Egyptians, Anglo Saxons and Ancient Maya. Work in other curriculum areas will link to these projects where appropriate, for example, the children will design and make Egyptian collars in their DT lessons and will focus on Egyptian notation within their music lessons. Within their Geography lessons, pupils will focus on settlements, Antarctica and rivers and the water cycle. Pupils will participate in 2 hours worth of PE per week. This will consist of structured PE lessons every Tuesday and daily mile sessions on other days throughout the week. In their science lessons, the children will cover the following areas: Electricity and Circuits; Animals including humans; Materials: states of matter; Energy: sound and vibrations and Living things and classification.
