Staff Team

Welcome to Year 2 Attenborough Class.

Our class teacher is Mrs Pither.

Our Learning Support Assistant is Miss Boyes.

Curriculum

We're excited to share an overview of what your child will be learning in Year 2. Our curriculum aims to build on the solid foundations of previous years while encouraging independence, confidence and a love of learning.

Our PE lessons will take place on Wednesdays. Please ensure your child comes to school in their school PE kit on this day each week.

Writing

In Year 2, pupils will further develop their writing skills by focusing on:

  • Grammar & punctuation: The children will learn the four types of sentences – statements, commands, questions and exclamations.

Consistently using full stops and capital letters, question marks, exclamation marks, commas in a list and apostrophes for contractions and singular processions.

Spelling: The children will be segmenting spoken words into phonemes and representing these by graphemes, spelling many correctly, learn how to spell common exception words; spell more words with contracted forms. They will add suffixes to spell longer words, including -ment, -ness, -ful, -less, -ly.

  • Creative writing: Writing for a range of purposes – including writing narratives about personal experiences and experiences of others, poetry, real experiences, descriptions, lists, instructions and postcards.
  • Handwriting: -Form lowercase letters correctly as well as capital letters and digits. Use spaces between words and develop fluency and neatness.

Reading

Reading is a key focus in Year 2, with an emphasis on:

  • Phonics & Word Reading - Continuing to use phonics to decode unfamiliar words. Recognise common suffixes (e.g. -ed, -ing, -est). Read most common words quickly without sounding them out (sight words). Self-correct when reading doesn't make sense.
  • Fluency - Read aloud with expression and pace. Use punctuation to guide reading (e.g. pausing at full stops, changing tone for questions).   Reread to improve accuracy and understanding.
  • Comprehension -Talk about what they’ve read. Make simple inferences (e.g. how a character feels). Predict what might happen next. Retell stories, including key events and details. Identify the main idea or message.

Children will take part in group and whole-class reading sessions, guided reading, and independent reading activities.
