AWE Science Graduates Visit Year 5 Pupils
Thirty children in Year 5 were given the opportunity to participate in Science experiments with AWE graduates. The event was very exciting and the children had hands-on experience with experiments whilst learning about buoyancy, exothermic reactions and how molecules link. The children created floating boats, slime and elephant toothpaste. A few weeks later, four of our Year 6 pupils were invited to attend a Science Challenge day at QMC where they were asked to create and present an air propelled vehicle design to the graduates.
English - Character Descriptions - June 2019
This week, children wrote a character description about Preston the mechanical dog. The children used a short animation clip as a stimulus for their writing. Our children's learning journey involved:
Some super pieces of work were produced and all the children were very aware of the mood and atmosphere they wanted to create in their writing. Preston, the malfunctioning mechanical dog, is certainly a frightening creature!
Year 6 Cycling - June 2019
Congratulations to all Year 6 who participated in cycling training this week. The children displayed a good knowledge of cycling positions, manoeuvres and signals and also considered some of the skills necessary to cycle on the road. The children worked well together to practise cycling skills. In addition to their practical training, they created video blogs about cycling on the road to pass on the importance of cycling safety.
Year 5 Bikeability - June 2019
Congratulations to all our Year 5 children who participated in cycling training with Bikeability. They worked hard to learn about cycling safely on the road.
Interhouse football tournament - May 2019
Year 5/6 children took part in an interhouse football tournament. The children supported each other within their house groups and worked hard to achieve the best possible results for their team. An equal number of girls and boys participated in the tournament. Well done to Heath, Pamber, Forest and Green Houses. Forest won overall - many congratulations!
Arithmetic Treasure Hunt - May 2019
Year 5/6 took advantage of the beautiful weather with an arithmetic treasure hunt around the school grounds. Children had to solve maths questions and then find the answers around the school. Once they had solved the answer to a question they found the answer card. Some answer cards were on shed doors, fences, in the adventure playground to name a few! Each numerical answer gave them a letter clue to help them find a secret phrase.
Reduce, Reuse, Recycle - May 2019
Well done to all the children in Year 5/6 who produced some wonderful gifts from recycling products. The children produced a variety of gifts including: plant holders, bird feeders, sock toys, cat houses, pencil holders, ornaments and pictures of endangered species made from recycled materials. Each child gave a presentation about the gift they had made which showed their awareness of environmental issues our rubbish is causing. Mr Warner (one of our Governors) watched many of the presentations and asked the children questions regarding the products they had made.
Numberlink - May 2019
Year 6 were introduced to Numberlink boards to learn multiplication tables with understanding. Many children challenged themselves to learn a variety of tables including multiplicands such as 888 and 1.23! The children used key facts to derive other facts proving that it can be easy to find any product mentally.
Electricity - May 2019
This term we have been learning about electricity and how to create circuits. The children loved creating light, and setting off buzzers! They compared and gave reasons for variations in how components function, including the brightness of bulbs and the loudness of buzzers. They recognised symbols when representing a simple circuit in a diagram.
Year 5/6 Rhythms of South America! - May 2019
Year 5/6 spent a music session in the afternoon learning how to play samba and learnt a piece called 'Simple Samba'. They learnt how to play call and response patterns and rhythmic grooves. The children were able to play different rhythms to a given pulse and learnt how to hold and play their instruments to create the best sound. Well done Year 5/6 - super rhythmic beats!
Year 5/6 Easter Art - April 2019
Year 5/6 create Easter Art! Children used pencil to create still life drawings of Hot Cross Buns and enjoyed singing the song ('Hot Cross Buns') as a round accompanied by Recorder Club. At our end of term Easter Assembly, at St. Paul’s church, Year 5/6 created a presentation about the significance of Hot Cross Buns at Easter.

Physical Education and Sporting Fun - March 2019
This term, in addition to the children's weekly Physical Education lessons, year 5/6 have had an opportunity to participate in a number of sport workshops. They were given the opportunity to trial judo and karate. In addition, the children participated in a fitness workshop with the Olympic swimmer Joe Roebuck. Keep up the great exercising children!
